Black cab fares could increase in county Black cab fares could rise from £1.80 to £2-per-mile in Shropshire later this month. Shropshire Council's licensing committee is due to discuss the proposal at its next meeting. The suggested changes also include night rates rising to £3 per mile and the base starting rate for black cabs rising by 50p to £6 during the day. Fares for Hackney carriages in the Shropshire local authority area have not risen since 2022, and the proposed increases have been requested by a driver who approached the council. Drivers were consulted in July, the council said, and were in support of the changes, although some wanted further increases. The proposed changes do not apply to private hire firms, whose maximum fares are not regulated by the local authority. The suggestions will go before the council's s strategic licensing committee on 9 October and if they are approved they could come into force by 17 October.
