Dear Licence Holder,
Those of you who have access to the Piccadilly Station Rank on Fairfield Street or have visited this area recently will have noticed that a substantial barrier in the form of evenly spaced vertical bollards are currently being installed along the pavement kerb line where it meets London Road and Fairfield Street. These bollards are being installed to protect the entrance to the station and pedestrians moving through this area from the threat of potential Hostile Vehicle incursion.
We have been notified that the next phase of this work will commence on Monday 13 May 2024, and will involve extending the barrier line along the Pavement which runs adjacent to the head of the rank beyond the Taxi access barrier. As a result the loading bay at the head of the rank will be taken out of commission, temporarily, to allow these works to be undertaken. During this work it is also planned to temporarily re locate the head of the rank to just in front of the Taxi access barrier in line with an existing lighting stanchion. The entrance roadway to the rank, the position of the rank payment barrier and the exit roadway route to Fairfield Street will remain as it is. In addition some sections of the Stainless Steel barrier that denotes the Taxi rank passenger waiting area will be re positioned to account for the new temporary arrangements. This phase of the work is expected to take 3 weeks to complete and when finished the Taxi rank will be reinstated to its current configuration.
The temporary removal of the loading bay at the head of the rank will inevitably have an effect on the efficient running of the rank especially in respect of the loading of wheelchair passengers as this activity will now have to take place without access to the loading bay. If wheelchairs are loaded on the rank, Taxis behind will not be able to bypass the vehicle that is loading a wheelchair due to the narrow roadway. Alternative wheelchair loading could take place in the adjacent general drop off/pick up area. This would involve any driver sat on the rank being approached by a wheelchair customer making arrangements for that customer to make their way to the drop off/pick up area and the driver leaving the rank and making there way round to that area to load the wheelchair, this method would avoid congestion on the rank.
