Man arrested for taxi cab driver's murder in Rochester
Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — A man faces charges after a taxi cab driver was shot to death early Monday.
Police said David Porter, 36, pistol-whipped, shot and killed David Treese, 45, during a robbery on the city's northeast side.
Treese was on duty just after 3 a.m. when he was called to First Street to pick up a fare, according to police.
When he arrived, Porter allegedly climbed into the cab with a gun and began to pistol-whip Treese and demand money.
Police said the cab pulled away as Porter continued to pistol-whip Treese.
"During the pistol-whipping, the suspect paused to fire approximately five to six shots from close range, striking the victim multiple times in the upper body," Police Chief David Smith said.
The pistol-whipping continued until the cab reached Bay Street, where Treese stumbled out of the car, collapsed on the sidewalk and died, according to police.
"Mr. Treese should not have died like this," Mayor Malik Evans said. "No one deserves to die in such a brutal way."
Porter allegedly jumped into the driver's seat and sped off. Police said he crashed the vehicle on Central Park, ditched the cab and ran off.
Officers responded to Central Park around 3:20 a.m. after receiving a 911 call about the crash. About an hour later, a passerby reported an unresponsive man on Bay Street — later identified as Treese.
"Taxi cab driver, 45 years old, never bothered anybody in his life, would give the shirt off his back — according to his mother and father and his colleagues," Evans said. "But he’s dead because of a coward, and I think that’s what people need to remember."
Authorities identified Porter as a suspect and found him Tuesday at an apartment in Chili. He's charged with murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said Porter is prohibited from possessing a handgun in New York state due to three prior felony convictions and three prior misdemeanor convictions.
"We pray that justice will be served in this dastardly case of a person just working their job, driving their cab, that now has to be absent from their family," Evans said.
Porter is also charged with criminal obstruction of breathing for a different incident. He was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held in Monroe County Jail without bail until the case is presented to a judge.
The incident was one of three homicides within 48 hours in the city.
