£1500 OF IRISH RUBBISH?
A Dublin taxi driver was “shocked beyond belief” when an Irish court fined him £50 for throwing a used phone card out the window of his taxi. Then, when Patrick Murphy didn’t pay the on the-spot fine, the Dublin District Court at a hearing that he failed to attend, increased it to £1,500! Mr Murphy immediately lodged an appeal against the decision.
However, when the case was called in the Circuit Civil Court, Mr Murphy failed to appear yet again and Judge James Birkley reaffirmed the £1,500 fine - the maximum payable under the 1997 Litter Pollution Act. A spokesperson at Dublin Corporation told Global News: “While we do not keep records that say whether the perpetrator is a taxi driver or not, I do know that there have been several instances of taxi drivers being caught for disposing of rubbish through their window. We have 20 litter wardens working around the clock and an increasing number of public spirited individuals who have reported litter louts to the authorities, whether they’re cabbies or not.”
