took a ride in a driverless taxi- and now people are freaking out
Driverless cars might seem like a dystopian service of the future, but in San Francisco they have become a reality.
Violet Witchel took to TikTok to share a clip of herself in a self-driving car, often dubbed 'robo-taxis'.
The video showed Violet sat in the backseat of the taxi while the driver’s seat remained vacant, and the wheel turned all by itself.
The lifestyle content creator marveled at the new phenomenon and thought it was 'cool' to see the 'stuff you thought was sci-fi as a kid become reality'.
But, unlike Violet's optimistic opinion, commenters on TikTok were less than impressed and likened the service to a 'nightmare'.
The video, which featured the writing, 'POV you live in San Francisco so you can take driverless taxis now', racked up more than a million views with people keen to catch a glimpse of the robo-taxi.
Violet shared her thoughts in the caption where she wrote: 'So cool seeing stuff you thought was sci-fi as a kid become a reality #selfdrivingcar #sanfrancisco #cruise'.
In the video, viewers could see an interactive map of Violet's journey displayed on the back of the unoccupied driver's seat.
One wrote: 'I could never actually place my trust fully on a self driving car until at least twp decades into the future'
A second person wrote: 'I would be lunging to the front seat to grab the steering wheel.'
A third added: 'Violet I have actual nightmares about this going wrong downhill. You’re very brave'
Another user said: 'Introverted me likes it, but my anxiety will never allow it.'
A fifth person added: 'I had so many of these nightmares as a kid.'
