What happened as Sheffield taxi drivers bring city centre to standstill with protest and trams delayed It is believed the protest may be related to the implementation of the Sheffield Clean Air Zone
A protest organised by Sheffield taxi drivers has brought the city centre to a standstill this afternoon with many routes blocked or slow moving.
There are widespread delays to public transport and other motorists in the city centre with reports of a slow moving convoy in various locations. Witnesses report taxis driving extremely slowly in a line and 'hogging' lanes.
A spokesperson for First South Yorkshire wrote on Twitter: "All services Sheffield - A large convoy of taxi drivers is currently driving around the city in some form of protest. All services currently subject to delay and regulation."
Social media page Sheffield Online has reported that the protest is in relation to the Clean Air Zone which was introduced earlier this year. It is not known at this time how long the protest is expected to last or which areas the convoy is heading to.
The latest traffic maps from the AA show widespread disruption on the Sheffield ring road (A61) and heading out towards Attercliffe. The AA estimates that delays are approaching 15 minutes in affected area
