A former Glencairn footballer who started a Rutherglen-based taxi company under a year ago has bagged a brace at a transport awards ceremony.
Domino Private Hire won Best Newcomer and Best Medium-Sized Taxi Company at the Scottish Passenger Transport Awards in Glasgow's Crown Plaza Glasgow on March 26.
The 40-year-old said: “I moved to Eastfield around 14 to 15 years ago, and I played for Rutherglen Glencairn, winning the Central First Division, Central Superleague and Central League Cup with the club. So, I consider myself an adopted Rutherglener.
“I had only been in the taxi trade for a year or two before starting the company, but I noticed a gap in the market during Covid. It has been massive growth since then.
“We have really grown in a time where taxis are scarce, so it can only help the area. We have a good relationship with local pubs like the Burgh, Sportsman and Gormans, we have done charity nights in places like the Vogue for Cancer Research, and we have donated to local primary schools. We have really tried to give back to the community.”
Despite the quick growth of Domino, Paul never expected to win the awards.
He added: “We were up against companies from all over Scotland, including Inverness, Edinburgh etc.
“We didn’t know what to expect. We thought that we might have a chance with the best newcomer, but it was a real shock to win the medium award, because of how new a company we are.
“There were about five or six companies in the Best Newcomer category, but to come out on top of Best Medium-Sized Company was mental because there were tons of companies from all over Scotland that were nominated for that.
