An unlicensed taxi driver whose car had failed its MOT was spotted making illegal journeys around 180 times. Saqib Zamaan started to be investigated by South Oxfordshire District Council following a report from a worried passenger.
Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard the passenger got into Zamaan's car at the taxi rank in Wallingford in February. They were so concerned about the noise coming from the vehicle when braking that they got out before reaching their destination.
During the council’s investigations, they found the vehicle had failed its MOT in February due to worn rear brake pads. Investigators also discovered that Zamaan’s licence had expired in January, which meant he was not permitted to drive it or pick up fare-paying passengers.

Despite not having a roadworthy car or an official driver’s licence, he was spotted around 180 times displaying a roof sign and taxi plate. Zamaan, 50, of Riversley Court, Reading, admitted illegally driving a licensed hackney carriage vehicle when his own licence had expired and was also found guilty of driving the unsafe vehicle, which had a serious defect.
