Uber-style' bus scheme introduced to save rural routes Passengers will be able to hop on board a bus at a time of their choosing under a pioneering plan to boost public transport.
A central computer would then calculate the best routes for the on-demand minibuses to pick up as many passengers as possible.
Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan believes it would help Britain's green and growth economy, as people in smaller communities would not need to rely on a car.
The Government said: "More people use buses than any other public transport but they don't get as much attention as rail, for example. We want to change that, using tech to provide bus services where they don't currently exist."
A pilot scheme currently connects the city of Coventry with towns in Warwickshire, using on-demand minibuses. Passengers book a bus and can track its progress on the app. Journeys cost between £1 and £6 depending on the distance travelled.
