It is with some regret I have to tell you an old Manc Cab driver has passed away.
Paddy Daly, a nightman of over 30 years(possibly 40) has passed away. I only heard from Facebook, so I do not know of any arrangements. However attending Funeral's are forbidden at the moment. Sad Times.
Paddy prior to becoming a Cab driver was a Professional Footballer, playing left wing for Blackburn Rover's.
In a time before the TV started to enable footballer's big money retiring Footballer's often became Cabbies in later life.
Paddy and I, along with our Pal Ronnie Oakes often had a pint around the Burnage area, Paddy worked night's on the Slip Rank.
Paddy like many Irish fella's was a funny man and he used to Laugh at himself. One of his favourite stories was when he got a Wheelchair Job off the slip to Chorlton, Tealby Court I believe, when he unloaded the Passenger, whilst Paddy was putting the ramps away, the bloke wheeled himself into the Flats and shut the door and gave Paddy the finger.
Paddy became the first Cabbie in History to get a runner from someone who could not run.
You might think it disrespectful to Laugh and post this story, but Paddy would not, he was pissing himself when he told the rest of us on the slip. He was that sort of Guy.
RIP Mate. Gone but not forgotten. X

Sorry to discover that Paddy had passed away in 2020. He was a great little footballer and character. Played on the wing for Witton Albion in the Cheshire League 1960s. RIP Paddy.
