Fleet of black cabs join farewell to popular driver who died with Covid-19



Camden tribute: John Murphy, a driver for 44 years ( )

A well-known taxi driver whose funeral cortege was accompanied by a fleet of black cabs, and a hospital chaplain described as a “pillar of support” are among the latest Londoners to die after contracting the coronavirus.

Father-of-five John Murphy, 82, a cab driver for 44 years before retiring three years ago, died in University College Hospital.

Although his funeral could only officially be attended by a few relatives, scores of well-wishers spaced out to line the streets of Camden on Tuesday as the procession filed past.

Mr Murphy had slept in Camden Town Tube station as a child during the Blitz and was proudly “Camden born and bred”. He claimed to have had Bruce Forsyth, Bob Monkhouse and Frank Sinatra among his fares.

He waved goodbye to his wife of 59 years from the back of an ambulance as he was taken to hospital with Covid-19 symptoms on April 7 and died five days later.
