Albert Square - Important Security Message
The Manchester Christmas Market will open for business on Friday 10 November 2017.
In light of recent terrorist incidents involving the use of vehicles, namely London Westminster Bridge, Bastille Day Celebrations in Nice, France and Berlin Christmas Markets, additional security features have been incorporated into the design of this years event.
The most obvious will be a physical barrier that will be erected around the perimeter of the Market on Albert Square to prevent hostile vehicles being driven into the Market area.
The barrier is to be put into place overnight on 8 November, so there will be some road closures involved whilst the work is carried out.
Roads around Albert Square will be closed from 7:00PM onwards except Princess Street which will be closed from 1:00AM until 6:00AM, when the trams are not running.
The hackney carriage rank on Albert Square will remain open and accessible once the barrier is in place, however the short section around the isolated traffic island at the entrance to the rank is being closed.
It is planned to retain this barrier around Albert Square, after the Christmas Markets have finished, so it will become a permanent feature to provide protection to all future events that take place in the Square.
The exact location and appearance of the barrier may change over time as feedback from users of the area is considered.
A map is attached which shows the location of the barrier.
