Albert Square - Traffic Signage
On 22 February 2017 the Licencing Unit issued a broadcast message to the
trade giving details of the revised traffic flows and signage that had been
introduced along the route of the second city tram crossing.
This was to assist drivers in understanding the new requirements and to
comply with the signage which had been devised to provide a safe
environment as possible for both drivers and pedestrians.
It has come to our attention that a significant number of licenced drivers
are ignoring the no right turn signage out of Albert Square at its
junction with Princess Street and John Dalton Street.
Right turns are being made from Albert Square into Princess Street, which
is a prohibited manoeuvre, indicated by clearly placed signage on the
traffic light stanchion.
Members of the public using the pedestrian crossing on Princess Street at
this location are reporting near misses with licenced vehicles making this
illegal manoeuvre and in some cases when challenged about this behaviour
drivers are directing verbal abuse at pedestrians.
Public safety is clearly at the heart of the traffic controls that are in
place and drivers are asked therefore to respect and comply with all
direction signage in the city.
Any evidence provided to the Licensing Unit of drivers carrying out
manoeuvres that are in contravention of traffic signage and/or directing
verbal abuse to other road users, in doing so, will be dealt with as a
minimum with a warning letter.
In individual serious cases or where drivers who have received warnings
fail to modify their behaviour, referrals will be made to the Licensing &
Appeals Sub committee, who have powers to issue warnings, suspend or revoke
licences.
The maps that were attached to the previous broadcast message are provided
below and directional arrows clearly show that when exiting Albert Square
traffic can only travel straight ahead or take a left turn into John Dalton
Street.
