Service Review – Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Driver Training

On 30 August 2011, the Licensing & Appeals Committee considered a report in relation to hackney carriage and private hire driver training. The committee agreed a review of driver training was required in relation to both existing and new drivers.

The report, highlighted a number of subject areas where driver training may be beneficial.

The Committee also asked Officers to

o include driving skills and parking enforcement / awareness as part of this process.
o put a framework together then come back to Committee with their proposals

Before officers provide a draft framework of future training requirements a consultation with licence holders and other interested parties will take place. A focus group will form part of the consultation process.

It is anticipated the focus group will be facilitated as follows:

o 36 licence holders from the trade will be split into 6 groups
o each group will consist of 6 persons
o each group will have a facilitator to assist the process
o each group will discuss a given topic (one of the training subject areas listed in the Committee report )
o following individual group discussion, the results will be fed back to the whole group for further discussion.
o At the end of the session a questionnaire will handed out to be completed by individuals.

Can I have a cost for the training which will be added to the badge ?

The Driving Standards Agency test for Taxi and Private hire drivers. The DSA test.

The cost to Hackney drivers is;

Weekday =92.94 Driving test...Wheelchair test 26.56.. Total £119.50

Weekend or Night test= 112.34 test..Wheelchair 32.68 Tot £145.02.

The agency also recommend you take a couple of lessons as well, from one of THEIR examiners, so you are prepared, price for this is upon request so the total cost could easily exceed £200.

It must be noted in the council's PDF, that Unite the Union have requested that this test and financial burden have been placed upon us.

I also want to get details about Port Macquarie Driving School that offer complete driving lessons, including safety tips, defensive driving and alcohol awareness. I don’t even know basic driving so will need lessons from scratch. Could you recommend a good academy for that?
