This fellow buried in Manchester, did something in 1843 which was to shape the Football Association, which did not get thought of for another 20 years, the F.A. was formed in 1863.
What did Marsden do ? no cheating with Google.

Did he invent a certain chocolate bar or discover some faraway red planet?

His memorial is in St johns gardens, Byrom St. But it would be cheating to look at it, because as you see from the photo, I have blanked out his achievment. However it is a tenuous link, he had no idea what he was shaping, it was by chance he helped the F.A.

None the wiser Les, so I will have some more guesses. Perhaps he invented the magic sponge, maybe designed John Motson's sheepskin or maybe invented that mystical concept of Fergie time. You will have to tell us I am running out of ideas.

Marsden, campaigned for and got, the Saturday half day holiday. We know the Mill owners fought hard against it.
I said it was tenuous, but if the Saturday half day was not introduced, the Football match as we know it would never have happened.
Sunday trading was outlawed, The Lords Day Observance Society were all powerful then, so no games Sunday, There were obviously no floodlights. So the imagies we have of full stadiums of 60,000 cloth capped men straight from work, would not have happened, but for Marsden.
